It’s Personal – Be It Known That

Posted on 65

Hi friends. Today’s post is going to be a little different. I’m sure you’ve come to expect great nail art and reviews (well, that’s the hope, anyways). For me, blogging is about a creative process, an outlet, and a space to share things that I truly care care about. I hope that I won’t ramble too much, but there’s so much going on in my life, that I’m just going to share some of myself with you and be personal.

First of all, some bad/scary news. On Monday night, my husband and I went to choir practice (I know, we’re precious!). When we came home, we discovered that our house had been robbed. I know this happens to lots of people, but I can’t tell you how hard and terrible it’s been. Lots of stuff was taken, but more than that, it’s terrifying to feel unsafe in your own house. Especially since we just bought this house – I was so afraid that perhaps we’d made an unwise decision.  Additionally, the sale of the house is public record, which means that there are tons of scammers trying to sell me stuff and take advantage of me, and I’ve felt like I’m surrounded by bad people.  I’ve had a really emotional reaction to this.

And yet. I received a package from my friend Jacqueline, owner of Liquid Palisade. I told her about the burglary, and she sent me a care package with fuzzy slippers and a Hello Kitty mug.

fuzzy slippers and hello kitty cup

Honestly, I cried when I saw it. As much as there are terrible people out in the world, there are also friends. There are people who love me and want me to feel better. And man, do those slippers help me feel at least a little warm and cozy in my own house.

Colorado Manicurist License

So here’s the other big news – only this is good news! I am now officially a licensed manicurist in the State of Colorado. I’m planning to share more about the exam process with you, but I’m just too excited to wait for a separate post. Because of everything going on, I really didn’t study very much at all – so I’m really relieved that I passed the exam! In Colorado, the testing agency issues cosmetology/barbering licenses on the spot, so I walked away with my official license yesterday.

And you know – I really love how the license proclaims, “Be it known!” I’m inspired and I’m taking it over.

Be it known, a$$hole burglars, that I won’t stand for this. I won’t let you make me feel vulnerable or alone. Be it known, world, that I am taking control of my safety.

Hannah Pearlman | The Dalai Lama's Nails

Be it known that you can’t keep me down. I’m wearing lipstick and glitter (Shimmer Tammy) on my fingers – be it known that I won’t fall into a crying heap (though I did do that, before), but that I will brush my fabulous self off and apply more glitter.

Be it known that this picture is unwatermarked, and I could give two-hoots if anybody out there on the internet steals from me today. I’ll go back to watermarking my photos, but for today, I’m offering this picture up as a sacrifice.

Be it known that I am back in the saddle. I’ve got more stuff planned for you (an entire month-long blogiversary celebration, coming up!). Thanks for your support, readers and friends.

  • Steve

Be it known that I’m proud of you my daughter. it will be next to impossible to keep you down. Be it know that the robbers will get theirs. God just doesn’t approve of bad people doing bad things to my Hannah.

Be it known you are one tough cookie! Congrats on getting your license and stay strong! No one should have the right to make another person feel unsafe and we are all here for you.

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

      I am a tough cookie!!!

  • I’m so sorry this happened to you! And in your new home, which should be an exciting and fun time. BUT, like you said, don’t let it keep you down and move on with your head held high. Congrats on the official license, too!

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

Just going to hold my head up high and move on, sister.

  • I’m so sorry that this happened to you! 🙁

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

      thanks, friend

  • I am so sorry that you were robbed. You have a really good attitude about it though — and what a sweet care package! And CONGRATS on becoming a licensed manicurist. Whenever I (finally) visit Colorado I’m coming to you to do my nails!

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

I’m working on my attitude! It would be terrible to keep myself feeling low, you know?

  • TKny

I was just trying to delete as many flagged emails as possible as I am “over the high-water mark” and I came to your emails with pictures of nail designs and resigned myself to not eliminating any and now your disappointing news about your private space being invaded. I am very sorry you have to deal with this but maybe you will be able to join others, no doubt, who also were “attacked” to find these psychopaths and get them off the street at least.
Maybe you will meet very good neighbors through this experience.

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

It’s true – I have gotten to know some of my neighbors better!

  • Lola Seicento

WOO HOO! Congratulations, Hannah! Love the manicure!

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

      thank you 🙂

  • That is really rough – I hope you’ve been able to up your security wherever they came in. A few months ago we had a breakin where they climbed in through the window. We live on the second floor so they literally climbed up the outside of the building, while we were asleep in bed! We were really grateful that they only took our things since we were home at the time but I can sympathise with how violated you feel! We put in some burglar bars or I’d worry every night after that.

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

Oh my gosh, that is terrifying! I am SO glad we weren’t home at the time.

  • Oh honey, I wish there was something I could do to help! Those a$$hats better not mess anymore with my friend Hannah! <3 Lots of hugs and don't let this get you down!

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

      <3 <3 <3

  • Carol

You are indeed strong and awesome, my dearest Hannah! While certainly a terrible and scary event, you are proactively moving forward, making your castle safe and defending your right to feel snug and safe in your home. Coming up – new holiday traditions, delicious cooking smells to fill your home, lots of love, fun and board games with family and friends to make new memories! Lots of love!!

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

That’s right! We’ll make this place feel warm and cozy 🙂

  • I’m sorry to hear that happened to you! Yes, be it known that your strong and you won’t let those bad guys take you down girl!

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

      They better watch out!

  • First of all, damn those robbers! They stole more than your belongings! They stole your piece of mind and your trust!!! I’m sending big virtual hugs and wishes of comfort to you because I can’t even begin to imagine how overwhelmed you must feel right now.
Big congratulations to you for officially becoming a manicurist and those booties make my feet feel toasty just looking at them! ( the mug is darn cute too! )
Hang in there, you will overcome this!!! ((hugs))

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

      Thanks so much, Dani!

  • I’m so sorry about your house. I’ve had my house broken into and it’s so cliche to say you feel violated but it’s true. It’s an awful feeling and I’m sorry you have to go through it. On the plus side, you rock and we are here for you if you need us! Be it known, you are awesome!

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

I know – it is kind of cliche, but completely accurate. It stinks!

  • Yael

Woohoo!!!! This post makes me smile and also want to give you the biggest hugs. You are just awesome and I am so, so proud of you. You always inspire me with your courage and your strength. <3

    • Yael

(Whoops, I guess it seems weird to say that this post makes me smile, but you know what I mean, lady. I’m proud of you for being strong and brave and getting through this.)

      • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

hahahaha thanks lady 🙂 Love ya

  • Agi

I got my Nov/Dec Nail It magazine today and saw you in there! Be it known that the positive recognition/ juju will outweigh the negative!

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

      aw, yay! Thanks 🙂

  • Color Me So Crazy

Wow!! There is sooooo much going on here!! Just hang on and go along for the ride because this will make one hell of a story!!

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

that’s for sure – one weird story!

  • Congratulations on your license and those robbers have got it coming to them. I’m so sorry you had to go through that =( A friend of mine was sitting in her living room with her little daughter (who is 2) and she looked up and in the kitchen doorway a man was standing there. She grabbed her daughter and ran out the front door, but could you imagine if she wouldn’t have seen him that fast? Ugh… She had everything locked up too and didn’t have any idea how he got in. Criminals need to apply themselves to a JOB like they do to breaking and entering.

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

wow, that is so scary! All I can say is that I am thankful that I wasn’t home. That is the stuff of nightmares – I’m glad your friend is ok.

  • cariwritesforyou

I’m so sorry about the break in! Congrats on getting licensed.

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

      thank you!

  • Oh man. People suck. I’m sorry you guys are going through this. 🙁 That package really did come at the perfect time. And, congratulations again though on the diploma. 🙂

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

Some people suck, but I’m trying to see the good that’s out there, too

  • (((HUGS))), Doll!!! My apartment was was robbed and I lived alone so, I KNOW, strongly, what that feeling is like! I ended up moving because I kept having nightmares that my ex-roommate and one of her friends (which I’m sure was who broke into my house) would rob me while I was home, asleep in my bed. Whoever it was broke into my bedroom window to get in. I couldn’t regain my sense of safety living there. Thank goodness I had moved my computer over to my boyfriend’s house (he’s now my husband). But some things didn’t add up. I know it was my former roommate because why would a robber steal an original drawing that she had given me for Christmas? And, only one drawer was gone through which happened to be the one that had my gun? Scary stuff.

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

wow, that’s terrible! I’m sorry that happened to you!!

  • Be it known that I’m proud of you for standing up and claiming your future! I know being burgled sucks hard and I’m sorry it happened to you but I’m super glad it was just things and not you or your hubby!

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

<3 Got to stand up for myself – who else will?

  • Kristin Bassett

I’m so sorry to hear about your house, but congrats on passing the exam!

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

      thank you!

  • I’m so sorry – a robbery is such a personal violation. Congrats on your license, though!

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

      Thanks 🙂

  • I’m so sorry for what you’ve gone through, but congratulations on passing your exam!

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

      Thanks, girl!

  • Betzy Carmona

Be it known that Hannah is an incredible woman and she’s gonna be just fine! I’m so sorry you’ve had to go through this all recently, but I think it’s absolutely wonderful that you’re trying to move past it and not let it get you down! Also, CONGRATS on getting your manicurist license for Colorado! <3

  • Keri Shannon

Oh goodness! Glad you are safe! Things can be replaced easily, but the peace of mind takes longer. :/ Hope you are feeling better soon! You obviously have a great support system around you.

  • Cosmetic Sanctuary

How awful 🙁 I’m so sorry. We bought a house a few years ago and it’s a scary time but I couldn’t imagine dealing with all of that.

  • What an awful experience! I’m glad no one was physically hurt but the vulnerability and fear you must’ve felt is so unfortunate. I’m happy for you getting your license, hurrah! ((hugs)) for the good and ((hugs)) for the bad.

  • Novita Erasma

I’m so sorry to hear this. It is really terrible when you don’t feel safe in your own home 🙁
