Digital Dozen does Thankfulness: Nail Art Supplies (and giveaway!)

The Digital Dozen does Thankfulness: Nail Art tools - Nail Vinyls and Liquid Palisade Giveaway! | The Dalai Lama's Nails

Press Sample

As a nail artist, I have a few obsessions: polish, cuticle and hand care, and nail art supplies. I am constantly on the lookout for all sorts of tools – anything that will aid my art! And I have tons of tools and accessories in my stash – brushes, dotting tools, you name it! There are a few accessories – I’m not sure if I should call them tools or implements or aids or what! – that I find myself coming back to again and again. They make my nail art life easier and happier. Liquid Palisade and Nail Vinyls! Liquid Palisade has become a really important aid in my nail art; I almost never do a gradient or water marble without it. Nail Vinyls are also really handy, and make everything that I would try to do with striping tape about 1000% easier. So, today, I am thankful for the tools that allow my creativity to more easily flow. Thank you, Nail Vinyls and Liquid Palisade!

The Digital Dozen does Thankfulness: Nail Art tools - Nail Vinyls and Liquid Palisade Giveaway! | The Dalai Lama's Nails

I’ve done a tutorial to show you how I achieved this awesome water spotting + chevron look, using Liquid Palisade and Nail Vinyls.

First, start by applying two coats of your favorite polish. I’m using Zoya Dita. Apply Liquid Palisade around your cuticles, and on a wider zone of your finger (since you’ll be dipping in water!). I applied the Liquid Palisade under the back of my finger, too.

Let the Liquid Palisade dry for about 40 seconds. It will turn from dark purple to a lighter, transparent purple when it’s dry. The Digital Dozen does Thankfulness: Nail Art tools - Nail Vinyls and Liquid Palisade Giveaway! | The Dalai Lama's Nails

Next, fill a paper cup with lukewarm water. Drop some polish into your cup, as if you were doing a water marble. For the white polish, I used Sally Hansen White Out. The Digital Dozen does Thankfulness: Nail Art tools - Nail Vinyls and Liquid Palisade Giveaway! | The Dalai Lama's Nails

This is the fun part! Spray some hairspray into the cup. It will start separating into blobs (like you see above), and then it will form lots of little pockets or bubbles. Dip your fingers into the cup, nails down, and then slowly lift them out.The Digital Dozen does Thankfulness: Nail Art tools - Nail Vinyls and Liquid Palisade Giveaway! | The Dalai Lama's Nails

Nip the back of the Liquid Palisade and slowly peel it off using Tweezers. The Digital Dozen does Thankfulness: Nail Art tools - Nail Vinyls and Liquid Palisade Giveaway! | The Dalai Lama's Nails

The Liquid Palisade protected my fingers SO much, though I still wanted to neaten things up a bit with a brush dipped in acetone. The Digital Dozen does Thankfulness: Nail Art tools - Nail Vinyls and Liquid Palisade Giveaway! | The Dalai Lama's Nails

At this point, your water spotting is done. This is a really cool looking manicure, on its own! The Digital Dozen does Thankfulness: Nail Art tools - Nail Vinyls and Liquid Palisade Giveaway! | The Dalai Lama's Nails

Wait for your mani to dry – either on its own, or by adding some quick dry top coat to speed things up. Next, apply Nail Vinyls on your accent fingers (or all of them, it would look cool, too!). Be sure to press down at the edges so no polish can seep underneath.

Apply black polish over the Nail Vinyls. I used Sally Hansen Black Out. The Digital Dozen does Thankfulness: Nail Art tools - Nail Vinyls and Liquid Palisade Giveaway! | The Dalai Lama's Nails

Before the polish dries, peel the Nail Vinyls off, leaving the chevron pattern. You may need to do a little more clean up. Apply your favorite top coat, and you’re done!

  • These are awesome! I am actually looking to do something similar for the start of my holiday series! I have had some really bad luck with hairspray…is any particular type work better over others?

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

I used generic hairspray from Walgreens – it was literally the cheapest kind I could find, and it was something like $1.75 for the whole can. I haven’t tried any other kinds, though!

      • The hairspray I used was generic from CVS but also over a year old and almost run out…it may have gone bad…hah…I’ll try hairspray again and hopefully get better results! Thanks!

  • Kelly Chambers

Nature is definitely the biggest thing that fuels my creativity. Great job with the nails. So cute!!!

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

I love nature as inspiration, too! I’m all about florals 🙂

  • Mindy Glazer

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

      that’s so sweet!

  • polishedaway

Honestly, my depression fuels my creativity. When I’m depressed, I’ve found that the best way to pull me out of it, is to practice nail art or to do something equally creative.

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

I think that’s why there are so many artists in this world – people whose burdens push them forwards.

  • Novita Erasma

Water spotting is such an easy nail art and creates beautiful random designs! I still haven’t tried liquid palisade, it’s quite pricey. Still sticking to elmer’s glue for now :p

    • The Dalai Lama’s Nails

I find that Elmer’s Glue dissolves for any kind of water marbling or spotting – I can’t peel it off after!

  • craftynail

I think alot of my ideas start with the colors- then the rest happens after that 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway !

  • Alana Belliveau

Everything and anything can fuel my creativity.

  • My creativity gets fueled in the most unlikely places – I may see a bedspread in a tv show with a pattern I love… or I may be doing cleanup on a mani and see a color combo together that spurs me to put them together on a nail (I use the same paper towel for cleanup for literally weeks sometimes, so it often turns into art itself!). Typically, though, most of my truly creative ideas hit me in that sweet spot within 10 minutes of falling asleep. I’ve started keeping a notebook by my bed so I can jot them down. Often I read them the next day and wonder wtf I was thinking, but sometimes I get winners!

  • dorofte alexandra
